Z97 for people who can deal with only 2 GPUs and DDR3.

At 4k you can build yourself a dual xeon workstation rig with a work station graphics.

x99 is better if you can really afford it but you might not need it what's the use case

5820K/mobo/2x4GB is only $200 more than 4790k/mobo/2x4GB, so if one were to spend $4000 on a PC he might as well get X99.
