R9 = GTX

R7 = GTX/GTS

R5 = GT

 

different tiers really. 7000 series naming scheme is obsolete, but are still relevant because they were designed to be future proof for 4-5 years. 

I'm a Nvidia fanboy but I want to be rehearsed on Amd's graphics card's naming. So, how are they named? What's the difference between a r9 and a 7000?

7000/6000/5000 is the old naming scheme of their cards before they changed the r7/r9 with their newer cards.

R9 is the top range, the 7000 series is the old series and R7 is the budget series (new)
