Core i5-4590 and H97 motherboard for budget...i5-4690K and Z97 if he can afford it and hyper 212 by cooler master as CPU cooler for cheap...good for overclocking.

Both CPU comes with a descent enough CPU heatsink...both won't ''require'' the hyper 212...i suggest it just in case he would want to overclock the i5-4690K.

How bad is his current cpu if he has to upgrade to use an gtx 970?

what does he need his cpu for? you cant just ask for the best cpu it depends on what he is going to do with it and how much money he is willing to spend

well he is currently using a i3 2120 and he will be mostly gaming on it with some small rendering. games are BF4 ARMA mincraft ect

it will fit, the cpu cooler is only 130mm high, the antec 300 can take up to 170mm.

Why upgrade to haswell when his motherboard would work with a 1230v1 or v2.

well...a sandy bridge core i3 is defenetly not what you want to pair with such a strong GPU that's for sure...but if he can only afford the GPU it's a good way to shoot high and consider a cpu upgrade as soon as he gets money for it...but yeah, this kit won't break the bank and will get the job done for a long time:
