I have had my PC for about 9months (my uncles old one) and whenever I play a steam game (CS:GO, DayZ, ArmA III, etc), it cuts out after about 15-20mins. I am not too sure if the Thermal Compound is alright, its been on there for about 4 years. Pc specs are as follows;

AMD Phenom X4 9650 64bit Quad Core.

6GB DDR2 333MHz RAM

ATI Radeon HD 4550

MSI 7501 Mobo

Run RealTemp while playing, and just before it usually shuts down, look at the Max Temps.  Would give a better idea of what's happening.

Realtemp doesn't support AMD :(

I'd try CoreTemp instead.

You could try CPU-Z and switching tabs (I forgot what the second tab is called, and you can click on the Max Temp and it will toggle between MIN/MAX/Average or something like that).

I don't think CPU-Z supports temp sensors, GPU-Z does that though.

After four years would ensure everything is dust free and would replace thermal paste .

Core temp is free and deals with AMD processors.

RealTemp doesnt work with my CPU, i tried earlier :/

Yeah i recently took the whole pc apart about 2weeks ago, ill order some thermal paste in a bit. Thanks though xD

So I ran DayZ for about 10minutes (Night, Lowest settings) and my CPU was hitting between 108 and 116 Degrees. Doesnt look good.

That is definitely NOT good. Even the stock heatsink can keep the temperatures under control.

- Make sure the fan on the CPU is still functional

- Clean an re-apply thermal paste

- Clean up any cable mess

- Clean off any caked on dust and dust balls / clumps

It might be that the HSF isn't clamped down properly.  My ex's desktop had a similar issue.  Doing nothing and it would hang and just generally be completely unstable.  Cooler wasn't locked in.

HSF is definitely clamped down properly, because AMD coolers are a massive mess on to fit :/

I spent about 15minutes doing that alone

Let me make sure I got this right. You pulled it completely apart 2 weeks ago? Was this before or after prooblems had been encountered. The way I read this is that you pulled it apart and didn't clean the heatsink and cpu (as well as fresh thermal paste). If that is the case, I would leave it off until you get a chance to clean the old junk off and apply new thermal paste. All you will do if it is getting that hot and you keep running it is fry stuff.

I pulled it apart after it started. I've redone the thermal paste, and it still happens if I'm running minecraft, skype and spotify. I dont even know why it happpens.

Celcius

SWEET JESUS! :P

Would have thought the thermal safety would have shut down the computer well be for that stage.

Yeah quick look says shouldnt be able to go above 70....

What are your idle temps? Does the comp eventually shut down from just sitting on the desktop.

My last system was a 9650, then I made the switch to intel....to a qx9650 lol. Compared to today standards, these cpus are dirt slow. I'd think about upgrading. Mine never got above 70c
