I am running with a r9 290 (sapphire trixx variant). in daily use I run it at 1200 on the core and 1500-1600 on the memory. With this config I dont see any artifacts and things usually run smoothly. However, the other day I was using amd's overdrive software I noticed that it showed the gpu only hitting 800-950 mhz. I tested this is Warframe as well as Far Cry 3. in both games I observed the same thing. Linus always talks up the community here and I was wondering if you could help me out.

It probably scales down as the game isnt as demanding as it is... (i get gpu usage of like 40% while playing games like league of legends) to save power

Usage and clock are separate things. In games, the clocks should be at the max you've set (give or take 50mhz in my experience) but the GPU usage is dependant on the game.

Even when I'm playing Quake, my clock is maxed, but my usage is low.

My gpu is at 100% if I can remember, but not a full clock.

Seems like it is throttling, what are your temps while gaming?

I dont know what versions of the card you have, but the reference cooler usually hits 90 °C and cant even keep the boost clock.

its the sapphire triX cooler, diffidently more capable than the stock.
