Not 100% sure, but I heard that if you cap your FPS you're gonna get better performance and your card isn't going to melt in menus in games that aren't demanding.

Yes, I knew that. I was just wondering about the difference between 'manual' FPS capping and vsync. Differences such as stuttering etc

FPS capping is usually variable, so you can set it to cap at whatever fps you want it to max out on.

Vsync will cap to the refresh rate of your monitor.

 

Basically the same thing except vsync cant be changed.

FPS caps your FPS at wherever you set it to. V-Sync caps the FPS to the maximum refresh rate of your monitors (probs 60hz so 60fps) to stop any lines or tearing.

I know, but does it cause stuttering just like V-sync does? I'm wondering about the visual differences

stuttering will happen when the fps dips below your monitors refresh rate.

if you cap or vsync your fps at your monitors refresh rate, when something intensive happens on screen you will notice lag spikes as fps drops below the Hz.

 

if you cap your fps far above your monitors refresh rate, lag spikes will happen much less often, but you might get the frame tearing that vsync reduces.

this is why gsync was invented.

If V-Sync is causing issues thats because your card is not able to keep up the 60fps required. Personally I turn all stuff like that off and it annoys me.

Adaptive V-Sync and Gsync do the same thing in my mind. (and then theres freesync)

V-Sync tries to keep the framerate the same as the refresh rate of the monitor. FPS capping doesn't let the FPS go over whatever amount u set it to

My personal experience is that I see no input lag whatsoever in most games with vsync on. And oddly, when I set a framerate cap to 60 in games that offer the option, I usually still see tearing until I turn vsync back on. I can't really explain that, but the result is that I'm perfectly happy with vsync.

Yeah I haven't seen any input lag either. Although I've noticed that it plays a tad smoother when I uncap it. People start noticing input lag when other people tell them there is, even when there actually isn't.
