Nvidia GTX 970 or GTX 980 for Asus ROG Swift PG278Q

Go to solution Solved by Jackbe,

If you're buying an ROG Swift, I'd recommend a 980. This is because the monitor can run at 120Hz and it's so much nicer than 60Hz in my opinion. A 970 wont be able to run 120fps at 2k, mind you, neither will a 980 at ultra settings in new games, but it should be noticeably better than a 970.

It depends whether you want to run at 120Hz or not.

Hi guys

I'm going to be building a new PC and I've got all my components picked out except for the graphics card.

I'm having a hard time deciding between the GTX 970 and the GTX 980. The monitor that I'm going to be using is the Asus ROG Swift PG278Q which runs at a resolution of 2560x1440 / 1440p. I would like to play my games (Bioshock, Battlefield, Far Cry etc.) on high to very high / ultra settings.

Since the ROG Swift is a G-Sync monitor, I was thinking I may could get away with a GTX 970 because as Linus and other tech reviewers mentioned, G-Sync is especially effective in the 35-50 fps range.

What do you guys think?

Regards from Switzerland,

IceExpress

2 970's would be better for that monitor to really shine. I don't think 1 970 will cut it. A 980 isn't a huge improvement but 2 970's would probably be perfect. It's more expensive than a single 980 but it will certainly be worth it.

I'd go with the 980, I'm not sure the 970 can sustain a minimum of 35 fps in most games at 1440p at high or ultra settings. That, and if you have a 144hz panel, don't you want to make the most of it?

I would say the 980, I don't think a single 970 would be able to hang at that res with AAA titles.

Either two 980s or 2 970s will do it. A single 970 won't be enough, and a single 980 will mean you will only be able to go up to high, not ultra.

Well, since I'm building an ITX-System I'll have only one PCI-Express slot which means I'm going to get the fastest single card -> GTX 980

Thanks guys!
