Is my CPU dead/broken?

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

here is my CPU of my old computer.. made 2008 (least 6 years ago).. I know it is from AMD.. but Im seeing those dusty places.. Is it still usable or do I have to get fresh new CPU?

If I have to get new one, then what is affordable working/editing video CPU I can use? any recommendation?

Thanks for the support and sorry for bad English..

Its more than likely fine, you just need to clean off the thermal paste and replace it with new paste.....

But, should you be using it? If you're doing anything more than web browsing, then no, its a crappy cpu. As for a replacement, you'll need to upgrade the motherboard and CPU (and probably the ram). As for a suggestion...it really depends what you're actually doing. For purely editing/rendering an AMD FX 8350 is the best choice (on a budget) and a 4790k is the optimal choice, if gaming is also going to occur, then an Intel 4690k (on a budget) or a 4790k to also get better editing performance.

Still fine.

If you want to keep using it, replace the thermal paste now.

But it's really weak, so I'd consider getting a new motherboard and CPU, along with RAM, if it isn't DDR3.

It's probably fine. Just clean it and find out...

Clear off the dust and the thermal paste and you should be fine.

Looks like it's just got thermal paste on it. You can just clean it off with toilet paper. Do the same on the heatsinks and put new paste on when you replace the heatsink. However the cpu probably is not fast enough for anything other than basic Web browsing today.

Thanks you all for the reply.. it is really helpful!  :)

It would be nice if you could clean off the old thermal paste on top of the CPU, and show us the model number, so we can identify what chip it is.

I still have my old socket AM2 system, and it still works fine for mid-level gaming.

It was capable of running Crysis 1 / Crysis Warhead on Medium-High settings, DiRT 2, STARCRAFT 2 on Extreme Preset...

Don t expect Ultra settings at 1080p -- especially on the new games.

Other than gaming, it still plenty powerful to be used as a general work PC.

Mine is a Athlon 64 X2 6000+ paried with a Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, and 4GB of DDR2 800MHz RAM.

Looks like an Athlon 64X2 of some variety. Based on the stepping (0741DPMW) a 90nm one.

It probably still works but won't do you a great deal of good in most games these days.

Indeed it looks like so.

Did a little bit more curious digging. The motherboard he has is an 690G chipset-based socket AM2 motherboard made by ECS (AMD690GM-M2).

Micro-ATX form factor.

Can support CPUs up to the 89W (aka 90nm Windsor Core) Athlon 64 X2 6000+
