PWM Fan Control

Go to solution Solved by LogicalDrm,

I could almost bet that Sys fan header on that board doesn't support PWM. Mine doesn't on Z87 and I know that it doesn't on Gaming series Z97 boards either. Splitter on CPU header is only way to go here if you want to control them with PWM.

(After checking manual) Yup, 4th pin on SYS_FAN2 isn't even connected to anywhere.

Hey there, so I've got a Z68XP-UD3 Mainboard from Gigabyte, that has two 4pin fan connectors. One is labeled as "CPU_FAN" and one is labeled as "SYS_FAN 2". Now I am trying to run 2 exact same fans (the ones which come with the H110 from Corsair) and controll their speed with a fan-curve through the Gigabyte software that comes with the Mainboard (called Easy Tune 6). And it appears that only the Fan connected to the "CPU_FAN" header seems to react to adjustments. the other one connected to the 4pin connector labeled with "SYS_FAN 2" always spins at the same speed.

So I'm assuming that probably the "SYS_FAN 2" header is not capable of beeing controlled through the software or the BIOS, while at the same time I'm wondering why it has 4 pins and not just 3 then.

Also could I run both fans at the same RPM if I just buy a PWM splitter and plug that into the "CPU_FAN" and plug both fans into that?

I'm also assuming it wouldnt be possible to run fans with the same max RPM specs at indivually set speeds from a PWM Splitter and if I wanted that I would have to get a Fan Controller thats a lot pricier.

Please correct me if I'm wrong with any of my assumtions, cause I don't really want to spend more money than I have to, to get my fans running at a noise level I'm comfortable with.

Cheers

Try a program called "speedfan" and try and change the speeds using that, though it's doubtful it'll work if you can't get it working through the Gigabyte software

Change the fan header modes in the BIOS to "Manual" and see if you can change the fan speeds again

I'll have to experiment a little with the bios settings tomorrow. but as for speedfan, that doesnt seem to have any other result as the Gigabyte sofware. Thanks for the suggestion though
