Windows 8.1: Decisions.

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

Seems fair, though, what's all about the professional OS? Just a fancy gimmick to obtain another 40 dollars?

From wikipedia:

Windows 8 Pro

Windows 8 Pro is comparable to Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate[4][5] and is targeted towards enthusiasts and business users; it includes all the features of Windows 8. Additional features include the ability to receive Remote Desktop connections, the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain, Encrypting File System, Hyper-V, and Virtual Hard Disk Booting, Group Policy as well as BitLocker and BitLocker To Go. Windows Media Center functionality is available only for Windows 8 Pro as a separate software package.[6]

aka stuff you will never use.

In the past few years a lot of 'pc noobs' bought windows 7 ultimate because they thought it was better even though it has a ton of features they dont even know how to use, slowing down your OS in the long run, and being more expensive.

Good day!

I've been asked the following:

''What Windows OS should I get? Honestly, I want Windows 8.1, but when I was browsing Best Buy, I noticed how there were two versions of Windows 8.1, I was confused! Should I buy Windows 8.1 64-Bit Professional OEM, Windows 8.1 64-Bit OEM, or the non-OEM equivalent of the two?''

I honestly cannot answer said question. The difference between those four, is that the non-OEM are much more expensive. I mean, very expensive.

As a wild guess, something tells me that the Windows 8.1 64-Bit System Builder is the best choice, but I can't express why. I did some research but couldn't comprehend what people said... Please help, anyone tech savvy?

He wants it for gaming and other entry-level activities, but he's curious about the professional aspect. What's the difference?

I'm referring solely to the OEM by now; Professional would add what, more OS speed? Security?

His PC has 8 GB of RAM, an AMD FX-8350, etc. Pretty High-End, by adequate standards, but he's stuck with what OS buy to choose.

Windows 8.1 64-Bit OEM, then?

OEM means you cant change Mobo

professional isnt really that important so just get the OEM unless your planning to change motherboard

Just googled that. Apparently that only applies to windows 7.

With windows 8 OEM you can change any part of the system and it is still a valid transferable version of windows.

Yeah, 8.1 system builder 64bit OEM is the one to go with :)

Just get Windows 8.1 from G2a. Just bought it off the site to install in a friends pc. https://www.g2a.com/windows-8-professional-32-64-bit-cd-key-global.html. Honestly once you get start is back windows 8 is pretty good

Its been confirmed that those are <insert abbreviation i dont remember here> windows licenses, and they expire in one or two years.

Also microsoft said they G2A is not an authorised reseller of windows keys and they do not support or back up G2A licenses.

Im 99% sure that it originally did but with SP1 that limit was removed.

No. The only way you could use more than 16GB of ram was to upgrade to windows 7 professional.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778(v=vs.85).aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_7

The paged pool is what changed with the service pack.  Which is kinda like "quick" access RAM.  Regardless, the changes are negligible and my apologies.

Windows 8 Pro should only be bought under 2 conditions 1) you plan on using advanced networking features or 2) you get it on a deal.

Lol, it wasnt free. It may of came with the laptop but the same model or similar specs probably could of been found for cheaper running a different version. Hell I bought my desktop without an OS to save a huge cost

Yeah that's not your fault ;). It's just ridiculous some people spend over 150% the price of windows for features they don't understand, lol
