So, earlier in the week, I purchased this ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231519

I got it last night, installed it, tried to boot my PC and was greeted with flashing motherboard diagnostic lights stating the board had failed. Hoping this wasn't actually the case, I quickly put in my old ram and tried to boot to the same old problem. Hours of troubleshooting later, I had a dead motherboard.

That said, I need a new motherboard asap and am on a budget. However, looking for motherboards that support the ram I just bought is proving a bit difficult for any fair price. Though, I did stumble across this board: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Intel-DISPLAY-Motherboard-GA-Z77-HD4/dp/B00APZXXWC/ref=sr_1_58?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1411753441&sr=1-58&keywords=motherboards

The board says it support 2800(OC) and immediately drops down to compatability to 1600 or lower. My question is, since the board doesn't explicitly state that it supports 2133, does that mean it doesn't and will downclock my ram to 1600? When looking for a board, do I need to make sure that it has exactly the speed I'm looking for or does anything higher than that work?

It should support it. Helping has the answer. He just said it better than me.

It should be compatible.

The number printed on the RAM module is just a clock speed that it is rated to run at. Just like a CPU's clockspeed, it can be overlooked or underclocked.

You would just need to set the speed you want it for fun at in the bios of your motherboard.

For that price you could get a decent z97 board and run that ram with probably no problems at all.....couldn't you?

Edit: Did not see that you needed lga 1155

Thanks for the straightforward answers. I've done practically zero overclocking other than easy GPU settings until very recently. I wasn't even aware you could change ram clock speeds in bios (my old mobo didn't support overclocking of any sort)

Trik'Stari, you're not wrong. The issue comes down to time and budget. Since this paycheck goes to rent and I work from home and need my computer to work, I'm restricted by getting this here tomorrow(amazon saturday delivery with prime) and with the only form of credit I have - amazon store credit.
