Hi guys. For my classes I need a machine running debian to do UNIX programming in C. I went to download the debian small package from the website and used PowerISO to create a bootable USB drive, and I can boot into it. However when I press install, I get two rows of black dots appear at the top of the laptop display over the GUI, and nothing happens. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it.

If anyone could help I would really appreciate it!

Try the netinst ISO. And make sure your laptop is plugged in via Ethernet.

Err not exactly sure where you've gone wrong. This is the ISO I used and it worked like a charm.

How exactly do I go about that? I'm assuming it needs to connect to a server of some kind?

That's what I thought was weird - this should work perfectly fine. I'm trying to install it on an old netbook of mine from a company called Mitac. Whether that is any valid reason why it doesn't work, I don't know.

Assuming you are able to load into the flash drive on the laptop to complete the setup process, I used graphical setup, the ISO contains a program that will download the rest of the necessary files.

I'm trying to figure out where you've gone wrong though. So you created the bootable drive. You plugged it in and booted into it but nothing came up?

Okay, so it's just an install client basically? I can try that.

Yep. I used PowerISO to make the bootable USB. I changed boot priority in the BIOS and it boots into the debian installer. The main screen comes up and I can access all the menus, but If I press enter on either install or graphical install, I get two rows of black dots appear at the top of the screen and it just hangs... I left it for a good half an hour and it did nothing, which I expected wasn't right.

EDIT: if it's important, the contents of the memory stick simply contain a folder called "efi".

Yea that's not right. There should be zero lag there. The next page should be asking about what language or region you are in.

I assume you picked the correct architecture? Amd64 or (32bit architechure).

the file is called amd64-netinst. Wait, that means it need an internet connection, right? Ugh.. It wasn't plugged in. But I've actually just realised this netbook doesn't have an ethernet port. Will the large installer work for that? ANd how do I go about getting it? I'm not sure which of the torrents is the right one.

Yes you will need internet via Ethernet as wifi drivers are not installed. Also, I attached a link to mg2r guide to Debian.

Please make a new thread if you have a question. Necroing is against coc.

In order to boot using live usb you need to use a program to take the netinstall ISO and install it onto a USB to make it bootable. From there you plug it into the back of your PC and boot to bios. Select the disc which is the bootable USB and boot into that. From there you should be able to select installation options.

If you need anything else pm me. I am out of town on mobile so I may not be quick to respond.
