If you need the extra cores, then it is needed. But if your just gaming then the FX 6300 should be fine. 

Saying that, it doesnt produce too much more heat and its not that much more expensive that the FX 8320.

how does it produce more heat and use more power? Fully using a 6300  isn't gonna be much if at all better than using 3/4s of a 8320... using same architecture, at same clocks power consumption will be based on work load and also look at powersupply efficiency curves and you'll notice it's more efficient at around 30-60% is usually the peak efficiency not 100% load...  You seem to be under some sort of misconception that they always use full energy no they don't they only take as much as they need no more, no less.
