Minecraft multiplayer error over college internet

A few friends and I are trying to play minecraft 1.8. Two of us have laptops on the university wi-fi connection and the other is plugged in with ethernet. We're trying to play a multiplayer world, but none of the PCs detect when one of them opens to LAN... We've also tried using direct connect and typing in the IP, and it comes up with the error java.net.socketException: Permission Denied: no further information. 

 

If anyone could help us that would be great! We just want to play Minecraft together  :(

I think it might be denied through the internet. Are your friends having the same problem?

I use to be able to input a cheat code now I've got to input a credit card - Total Biscuit

The college wifi probably has something blocked preventing this. Theres a member of the guild I'm in that can't play swtor on his laptop at work because they have certain ports blocked off to prevent people from p2p downloading or some such BS

 

Edit: He works at a college

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Yeah, we're all in the same room and I'm pretty sure the two laptops are connected to the same router, so I'd have thought one of them would see each other if they opened to LAN...

Yeah, we're all in the same room and I'm pretty sure the two laptops are connected to the same router, so I'd have thought one of them would see each other if they opened to LAN...

 

I guess I can try asking at the reception... I'll try going now.

My guess is something like a proxy before the IP of the server... ( I have no idea how these things work)

You could try running the mc dedicated server software which should work as long as you are all on the same LAN

We've tried that too. No luck there either. We've even tried Hamachi...

Oh wow, if you had no luck with Hamachi then... well who knows... Can the machines see each other on the network?

I would offer to temporarily host one on my spare re purposed Dell server but, first issue is my internet which is still plaguing me (fibre at the end of the month.... woo) second is my power is out at home... not so wooooo

 

Aw, you don't have to worry about that, but thank you anyway. :) On Hamachi, the connection to the PCs is a delayed tunnel. That's all I know.

they probably blocked it

 

 

make an AD hoc network instead and let people connect to you

thats what at college

works wonderfully for lan play

if u want internet play u need to have an ethernet cable connected + wifi adhoc so people can connect to you

another way is to buy a router but dont set it up as a Access point

That's okay, don't worry. We ended up buying an ethernet switch so that will fix our problem :)
