I am trying to OC my cpu but for some reason I can't get it to work. I have a G3258 on an ASUS Z97-K so I go to advanced mode in UEFI BIOS then AI TWEAKER and I change the core ratio specs from 32 to 33, and nothing happens, I tried higher values and the same problem. Here is a screen with CPUZ :dafuq.png

The core multiplier here is x32 although I've set is to 33 . What's the problem ? Do I need to lift the voltage ?

If your PC idles it will not run on the OC multiplier because it does not need it ofcourse. It decreases the multiplier to save power and reduce heat output. To test whether your OC settings will apply you need to run a stress test like OCCT or AIDA64

Watch this video on how to OC:

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Best way to do is get AIDA64, put vcore to 1.2v and increase your multiplier to the highest stable OC that you can have.

Did you run AI Suite's 5 way optimization or did you just change settings/figures in the AI Tweaker? You should start by running 5 way optimization first which will help you understand OCing and show you what your system is capable of.

This is one way to OC but it is not the "best way" He should use stock voltage and then increase the multiplier until he BSOD then add Vcore as needed to increase his OC while keeping the temperatures reasonable.

Well personally, I think 1.2v is a safe voltage for him to try @Leonard. Yeah I might have exaggerated with my answer. xD

While the 1.2v is considered a safe voltage you should take into consideration the every CPU is different and thus the proper approach should be taken unless he is jut going for some sort of bragging rights and couldn't care less about his CPU.

Well, my mobo doesn't have 5 way optimization. It really is a ASUS'S z97 budget so I don't have these fancy features. However I have some auto-tuning in the AI suite but if I remember corectly last time time I've used it nothing really changed, like I said.

What is the exact motherboard because i have never heard of a z97 from ASUS that doesn't have 5 way optimization. ASUS z97 motherboards are overclockable with AI SuiteIII. So maybe you motherboard is not a Z97 but maybe an h97 or something.

ASUS Z97-K  http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97K/

update your bios

I asked that question here and people said that I should only update the BIOS if the hardware isn't working properly. Now... I don't know if I should update it.

Well my G3258 could overclock on my stock BIOS but I ran into the same issue as you, where it'd recognize it can go up to say... 4.2ghz (42 multi) but when checking CPU-Z it never went above 3.2

Dude that MOBO has Ai Suite3 so there for you should get 5 way optimization. Are you sure you have all drivers for the MOBO installed? http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97K/HelpDesk_Download/
