Hello

I always had a gaming laptop and the latest gaming laptop i had for the past 4 years was the sager with the gtx460m. Now i decided to move and build my first desktop , yes ive seen ideas all over the forums but still cant decide what components to buy to fit my description. Mainly ill be using it for gaming,  multimedia, and occasionally running software's like Matlab/Solidworks and some video editing.

My budget is around $1200 and that's without a monitor ( 1440p or 4k ) which will come later .

I would like to run most games at max setting and the desktop to keep going strong ( performance wise) for the next couple of years.

If you guys can help me out with picking the parts and what works best with what , that ll be awesome since im not sure how to pick the motherboard for example.

One thing i really want to is to have the whole thing to be colored combination of White and Red/Green depending on availability of the parts.

Basically the whole thing would be glowing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, GD

Did you have a form factor you wanted to go with? ATX, mATX, m-ITX?

If you pick a case you absolutely love, it'll be easier for us to fill it. Cases are very personal things most of the time.

4k or 1440p? They have different requirements, and it will alter the build.

Especially since you want to play at max settings.

Do you need a lot of storage for media etc?

Do you need peripherals? Windows?

Do you have an AMD/Nvidia preference? I imagine most will recommend Nvidia right now but the AMD cards are (likely) just around the corner.

Thanks for your help,

I was looking at the ATX, and obviously if end up going with a 4k monitor i wont be running at max setting, but my point was to run most things at a relatively decent settings for the 1440p setup.

For storage wise i was thinking of combining a normal HDD combined with an SSD for the windows and main programs .

No need for peripherals since i have most of them.

I've always used nvidia for my gaming laptop and never had problems with them. Now im not too sure how is that compared to the desktop setting since im not too familiar with them. I would say " Best performance/ longevity for the bucks" something that would stay cool under load and wouldn't omit that massive amount of noise

Ill do some more research for the cases, but ive seen some Straight up white cases with transparent windows show  the red lights emitting from inside which i really liked.

I'd probably go with an i5 for your budget, 240gb SSD, 1tb HDD, and if you can manage the slightly higher cost, the GTX 980. Solid card for 1440p, if you go 4k just add another and you'll get pretty good fps there as well. 3 980's actually go over 60fps on most games...which was pretty surprising to me!

I like the H440 case. Or the Enthoo Evolv if you can live with an mATX motherboard.

AMD might put out a better card this week though so it's worth waiting a few days.

Alright awesome guys thanks for your help, and also i saw that in that build that he choose the " MSI Z97-Gaming 5 atx " , so what exactly does a person look in the motherboard ? Is that one a decent motherboard ? or its AMD specific motherboard ?

I wont be buying anything right now until the amd GPU come out and see some results.

So i have everything figured out for the most part, also i really like that "H440 case" excatly what i saw in other build just trying to figure out the lighting from inside now

  • 2 weeks later...

Also so after finishing my research and adding a bit to my budget i came out with this build

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/GD/saved/QLgrxr

I increased my budget up to 1500 so whats missing is the GPU which i still didn't decide what to use and if the Nvidia 9 series is worth it .

Any recommendations to change anything on this list ? Any tips would be awesome.

Thanks
