"Interim" Computer to eventually serve as NAS.

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

I know it's just was the closest thing I could find to the larger red and yeah...

This NAS will serve as mostly backups and additional storage set up for FTP.

Alright, since this is the case, you could go with a smaller WD Red for the more frequent usage on the NAS (occasional streaming and used files) and throw in a WD Green for the long-term storage (files that you wouldn't be using frequently). You don't need to set up a RAID.
Furthermore, if the build is a backup only, I would put 2 WD Greens in RAID 1 for large capacity and good redundancy. Anyway, WD Purple would be the last option you'd want to consider.

So this will be my NAS since it's cheaper than the build that will be the primary user I'm doing this first and since I'm getting tired of replacing my laptop's charging cord every couple months this will serve as my "Interim" build until I can afford to make my real system. Since it won't be used for high demanding task while running linux and when it gets its Ubuntu Server that it will just become a backup server for my main build.

So what distro would run the smoothest on this?
Ubuntu would probably run too slow...

Anything should run fast on those pentiums, they are not that bad at all

My home server uses the slightly better g3220 but I am running full blown windows server on it!

Hey wcreek,

As the others pointed out, pretty much anything should run without a problem on this build.

I would get 2x4GB for the memory because that mobo supports dual channel and (if you are not planning on adding another 8GB stick) it should run better with 2x4GB instead of 1x8GB (especially when used as NAS).

Also, are you planning on putting those Reds in RAID (when you get the second one)? I would recommend you get similar ones because the difference in rpm and storage capacity might cause some problems and you may encounter some limitations (speed, capacity, etc.).

Otherwise, looks great for a budget NAS :)

Hope this helps,

Captain_WD.

Okay then, Changed the 1x8 for 2x4... And the WD 1TB red is a purple now, since that has the same RPM as the 4TB drive..

Hey again,

WD Purple is designed for Surveillance storage and it is not suitable for desktops and NAS systems. It is more for recording and storing recordings from surveillance cameras. You might have problems using it for everyday computing and NAS. You can read a bit more here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1210

If you are looking for something simply for storing data and streaming it from your NAS, WD Blue, Black and Red are suitable options. WD Green would also be an option if you plan only on storing your data on the NAS. WD Red drives are meant for NAS and RAID setups. A compromise between storage capacity, speed and NAS would be the WD Black. If you are looking for a low-power, quiet and cool drive, WD Green is the thing you are looking for.

It would be easier if you list what you plan on using that server for (gaming, storing, streaming, office work, etc.).
