iPhone 4S can't delete SMS conversations

Installing IOS8 will wipe the data anyway. Just factory reset it and then install ios8.

My friend has an iPhone 4S 16GB. She cannot update to iOS 8 due to lack of storage. In settings it says "used storage 11GB". Deeper into the settings you can see a list of programs and their storage use. Here it says "messages" use 13.8GB of storage, which is impossible (that would be millions of texts). The conversations can be deleted but the phone gets buggy and weird and after a reset (home+power 10 sec) all (or most) of the messages are restored and the storage use is still the same.

I want to help her but I am not used to iOS and can't really find a solution apart from restoring to factory default, which she finds too cumbersome.

Has anybody seen this issue before? Any suggestions or possible solutions?
