I buy what i need. Extensive research and always Nvivida (for the cUDA cores, not because i am a fanboy). Usually high-end but not top of the line

for previous gen cards the answer would be no but the 780 host the powerful GK110 GPU from the titan only slightly cut down but it's significantly faster than the 770 this time around...but the best option to the 770/780 is to go with the amd RADEON R9 290 which is just as powerful as a 780 but cost much less.

for me personally probably just 1080p

i want a second monitor but i don't know i'd be gaming dual screen with it

If you have no problem going AMD i'd recommend the R9 290 4GB graphics card it's very powerful and will run any games at 1080P on highest settings at 60+FPS...the card is a good 30% faster than a 770 and should cost you about the same:

There's no rule of thumb to be hoenst. As said before, get the best you can afford.

i guess a follow up question is would someone be losing out on much by going with a 770 over a 780 or a step below cards

Well, it depends. What's your budget? What's your purpose? Gaming at 1080p or 1440p?

If you have a tight budget, you should consider a AMD video card as they have the best bang for the buck out there.

If you really are between nVidia's 770 and 780, I would wait a little longer for the next generation of 9xx series comes out and the prices start to drop. By then, you could even think about getting a 780 Ti if the prices do actually drop that much.

Anyway, right now, I don't think getting a 770 is worth it because in the future, when you want to upgrade your computer for gaming purposes, getting a 770 SLI won't be as future proof as a 780 SLI. Not to mention bandwidth.

Good luck.

I generally go for the 'step down' card based on the high end chip, for example 7950 over 7970. Or R9 290 over 290x. Little different with nvidia, I'd probably take 780 over 770 as gk104 and gk110 are quite different

assuming that the 970 card will be around 400 it'd probably be worth while to wait for that?

granted i know we won't know till actual benchmarks are put out

Totally worth it. If the benchmarks show that it's not worth getting the 9xx series, get the 7xx which will probably be cheaper after a while.
