GTX 980 and GTX 970

I'm pumped, will be upgrading from a 500 series. 700 or 900...soon to be decided.

I see people complaining all the time about the lower bus, lower TDP and fewer cores. Whilst leaked benchmarks already point out that it can achieve the same level of performance as the full featured card (in this case 700-series with higher core count and memory bus interface and tdp) with the lower power requirements (and according to Videocardz: Lower cost at launch).

It is not all about raw power! Lower TDP ==> Less heat ==> Silence

==> More overclocking headroom ==> Better performance!

Efficiency is the name of this 900-series!

I concur!

If its all about value then i would think you would be looking for an AMD card since they clearly have a better price/perfomance ratio by far.

I care about value, performance, efficiency, cooling, and silence.

The GTX 970 is sounding like the best option. Above GTX 780 performance for around $300 to $350. The price gap between these two cards is what is not making sense. They may very well do a GTX 970 Ti...or the GTX 980 may have a lower launch price than what everybody is expecting. If it does not beat out the GTX 780 Ti on performance, I will most likely want to roll with the 970. Whatever gets me the best performance at the lowest cost 770/780/970/980. This would also mean some serious price drops on 770 & 780. If it turns out that 980 somehow beats 780 Ti then that would mean price drops there too. If there is any truth to these performance & pricing rumors then it's long over due Nvidia shows PC gamers the love. We shall know prices in less than 11 hours...benchmarks will be all over the internet 24 to 48 hours later...as usual! Tell the shipping dudes to grease their wheels! :P

aand 980 benchmarks leaked (at least according to rumors)

980 supposed to be 13% faster than 780Ti

Got a link? I would be very interested to see that.

illunare Those so called benchmarks seem biased, I thought the 290x is slightly better than the 780 ti right? the site rates it as being weaker. Correct me if I'm wrong

There is high chance that benchmarks are fake.

On 780 Ti vs 290x i got no idea, i personally dont have any of the cards, but from the info i found on internet i got the idea that 780 Ti is faster.

But 290x will behave better in applications that require more memory (290x got 1GB more than Ti)

GAME24 is here! Now things are starting to make more sense...Maxwell = 2x FPS of Kepler...that's just huge!! So the whole power efficiency angle boils down to increased FPS + new and/or improved upon rendering tech + incredible overclocking ability. Things just got real!...ok...let us buy the damn cards already!!

Well now the prices are official...GTX 980 reference = $549.99, GTX 970 reference = $329.99.

So figure aftermarket cooling will cost additional $30 to $50? EVGA extreme versions being $100+ more! I'm probably looking at GTX 970 now. If the GTX 980 was $100 cheaper I would have been sold on it. Maybe I can trade up for an 8GB GTX 980 when the prices finally come down. I could get a 780 but I think the 970 performance will be better, especially when OC'd. Changed my vote to GTX 970!

Just read a couple of early reviews of the gtx 980. It seems like the 980 does indeed beat the 780ti in most benchmarks by the slightest of margins. Granted this is comparing reference non OC'd cards. A factory OC'd 780ti with a non reference cooler like the gigabyte windforce still probably beats the 980 in most games.

Nothing really unexpected in the reviews, aside from the fact the 980 didn't seem to really run much cooler than the 780/ti and in one of the reviews actually ran hotter than the 770.

Ill also add that the videocardz benchmark someone linked to does indeed seem fake to me, since it showed the 980 doing much better than the other reviews I read, which were definitely the real thing(and still probably slightly Nvidia biased since they were provided 980s by Nvidia for review I believe).

VERY difficult to believe that the 980 will run hotter when it is WAY lower power and more overclocking headroom than ever before. Those 2 things coming from Nvidia on GAME 24. I absolutely have to have a backplate so I am looking for a picture that proves ASUS STRIX-GTX970-DC20C-4GD5 has a backplate.

ASUS does include backplate on STRIX-GTX970-DC20C-4GD5:

http://nl.hardware.info/productinfo/253092/asus-geforce-gtx-970-strix-4gb#tab:fotos

bought from Amazon with 2-day shipping + unknown ship date. They hit me $23.80 tax + $11.98 for 2-day shipping. Total was $375.77...jeesh!

If I can find it cheaper I will cancel the order. Any help appreciated!

That is one area where I will always recommend AMD. I seen estimates done according to specs. I can't remember 'where' I seen them, but AMD still wins in this area!
