It got shitty reviews, though.  What's the point of getting a low quality mobo.....not me!   I rather spend a bit more and be safe.

It's actually a great motherboard I hear. I'd rather get the updated Z97 PC MATE, but hey.

I just bought this combo to update my kid's computer.  Impulse-buy maybe, but it's a nice jump from 1st generation i5 to 4th.   He'll be able to get slightly better video performance from PCI2.0 and the SSD won't be crippled by SATA2.  Now I just need to decide on a processor.  Thinking 4660S.

A crowd-sourced hot-deals forum is a great idea.

4660s? Assuming you mean 4570s, stay away from 's' parts and grab either a 4590 or a 4690k.

Sorry, typo.  I meant 4440s.  This guy:  http://smile.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4440S-Processor-2-8GHz-BX80646I54440S/dp/B00EUUJPJ8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid

I know "s" is low-power.  The computer is basically my son's, and it's kept in his bedroom.  He has an i5 750s now and his computer increases the temperature of his room 5-8 degrees F.  Adding more wattage to the output and making it warmer isn't something I really want to do to him... especially considering he hasn't asked for any upgrades.

Just get the cheapest i5. The S parts are usually lower binned with a lower turbo clock. You should be able to turn off turbo or adjust it in the bios and it'll run the same but you'll also have some headroom for the future.

It's really not much cheaper than 4690k; why not get a 4690k and undervolt?

Anyone who has a sister hates the fact that his sister isn't Kasugano Sora.

I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

Well I dunno.   :)  I'm not totally "in the know" about processors.    But since you said so, I looked at http://ark.intel.com/compare/80815,80811   and it looks like the 4690 is more current.  (devil's canyon?)  I'm learning.. slowly..

I guess I should look to see if the MSI Z87 board is compatible with devil's canyon.

Edit // Well it is.  Still need to do some decision making.  Its $40 more than the low-power one I linked earlier.

When will they make a dirt cheap motherboard that isn't hideously blue? Entirely black is all we want damnit.
