Im shopping for a waterblock for my r9280 and all i can find is r9280X waterblocks  would that still work, and do i need to have a refrence card or can i use as asus one too?

280X blocks will work since they're basically the same card, however non-reference PCB may be an issue

To answer your question...

The 280 and 280x use the same PCB (afaik) so 280x waterblocks should work on 280s.

And yes you need a GPU with a reference PCB. If your card does not have a reference PCB it will be very hard or impossible to find a waterblock that fits your specific card.

EK has compatability checker on their site, i would guess other block manufacutres would also have that.
