I would go with the 50mm 1.4.

For everyday use, 50mm on a crop sensor may not be acceptable. It really depends what the use is.

Indeed, it does depend on the use. I still think for every day use it's acceptable but that's just my opinion.

The 70D is a crop sensor. All Canon cameras up to and including the 7D are crop sensors but some 1D models are crop sensors. My fave everyday lens would be the Sigma 24-105.

Not completely correct. Some of the 1D range which use the APS-H sensor are also cropped sensor. It was made for the professional sports photographers out there, but I know what you were going for.

Easily my most used lens is my 50mm. The ability to stop it down to f/1.2 is amazing! It is also super sharp! But I have other lenses to fall back on. if you dont have a few lenses I would get the 18-200mm lens which covers all focal ranges you might need. I would then buy some more lenses over time. i.e 18-55mm, 50mm 1.8 and 70-300mm

If money isn't an object right away then I would go for a Canon 24-105mm f/4 as a single all round lens.

Yeh, it was released on the 1D range where as the 1Ds range used full frame for the most part. APS-H is between full frame and APS-C at a 1.3x crop.

It is being fazed out with the new 1D X using a Full frame sensor.

If you want a prime go with a 35mm, if you want a zoom something like the 24-70 or 24-105 should do the trick

Primes can be great, but I wouldn't want to use one for almost everything. I'd want a 24-70 or 24-105.

zooms are for lazy photographers :P

A prime can be fine depending on what you're photographing...I personally mainly take photos of landscapes and the occasional city scape. And a nice prime can often be a better choice since most of my photos end up being on the wide end....although there are certainly occassions when a zoom is helpful.

I believe it is a 1.5x crop factor...

It's Canon, so 1.6x :P unless Canon changed it in the past 3 years.

Personally I have a 28-90 and a 80-200. My slr isn't digital though, I just stopped using it and bought a compact as DSLR is not in my budget atm.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

I use a 35mm for my walkaround lens for "street" photography. I am using it on a Crop Sensor.

If you have a full frame, a 50mm achieves close to the same effect (Effect = see something, take a picture, the framing is close to what you see, not too much zoom etc.).

All around lens? A fixed aperture wide-zoom. So, 18-55, 24-100+ etc. You'll have a fixed Aperture, which comes in handy, but also zoom. Wont get as good of low light that you get with a fast 1.8 or 1.4 of course.

Digitalrev just did a video on this:

I Personally would go for the 28mm just because I find that the 50mm can be awkward because it is so cropped in.

good point i actually watched that but no comment was made about a crop sensor since funnly enough my main lens is 85 mm f1.8 with a 1.6 crop so i think that she would go with 50 and then buy a 35 since she loves BOKEH and the fifty has 8 aperture blades and f 1.4
