Another Really Stupid Car Question...

Hi, I had my transmission fixed yesterday. It is shifting perfect. Now I was driving to the store no problem on my way back light to dark grey smoke came from under the hood. It was coming from underneath the engine between the engine block and coolant tank. Any ideas> It is a chevy lumina 1996 with 100,099 Miles.

Pictures of what, why my car looks like its on fire I did not think to pull out my phone, I am sorry.

On a serious note though, showing pics of the engine could help locate the problem.

If they've been messing with the transmission it might be transmission oil that burned off when it got hot enough.
Has there been any more smoke?

Take it back to the shop that fixed it and tell them what's going on. They were the last ones to touch it and they are obligated to ensure they did their work correctly.

If I start it and drive. It smokes for a while even if I use the car in neutral.

Take it back to the mechanic then as Lord pants has already said.

Since this happened after they touched the car they should at least check it out

This is really something that needs to be addressed in person. Unless we see detailed pictures of everything, including video it is extremely hard to determine the problem from a description. And if you aren't mechanically inclined enough to figure the problem out for yourself, even if we could find the problem you wouldn't be able to fix it. Take it back to the mechanic who worked on it and let them check it out.

Does it smell sweet? Could be coolant, if you burst a radiator hose.

It smells like burnt plastic...or kinda like burnt steel pan when  cooking.

How is the engine temp?

I want to say torque converter though.. We had a car at work that had a poorly installed torque converter and it showed similar symptoms. But it only smoked if you accelerated quickly :/

Plastic smell and high engine temps are concerning. Flex plate rubbing? Does the car drive or no?

Do you still have about as much coolant as you had before?

It might've overheated and cracked/split a hose

Do you still have the same pull from the engine too? If it's a bit sluggish and or stuttering very slightly it could've popped the head gasket

That could explain the gray smoke (Coolant mixed with oil/gas)

Coolant should smell sweet though... But this was my first thought.

It drives, but smokes quite a bit.

I have plenty of coolant I checked that because the smoke was coming from under the coolant tank and to the right.

Plenty of pep. If I step on it, it goes. I would know if it was a head gasket

Did someone drop a plastic tank or shroud on the exhaust and forget to secure it? Does it seem like there is anything loose or out of place?

Take it to the mechanic. And don't accept paying for anything unless they can prove that they haven't messed something up.

Hopefully it's something trivial^^

I looked all around, there is nothing plastic dropped in there. Exhaust is good. I have my dad here I am looking at my car we cannot figure it out. Engine temp is at 240 ish. Nothing is loose or out of place but you started and a thin dark ish grey smoke bellows up. I have it off now cause it is scarring me...

Hmm. 240 is getting warm. But your not losing coolant? Is there any fluids leaking onto the ground?

I don't know about the other countries, but in my country, the garage person has to sign off for his work. If he fucked it up, he fucked it up.

If you wanted to avoid taxes, or if you got a mate to do it, without any sign offs, I hope you're a DIY guy.
