I got a free version of AMD's RAM disk pro. I have 16GB of 2133MHz in my main rig, what can i use this for and is it worth even using?

Thanks for any replies/suggestions

If you know what is a RAM Disk, then you should know if you need it or not.

Basically you can have a tiny bit of storage that is insanely fast, useful for a scratch disk or a certain application. If you don't need to work with these types of things, then don't use it as it will only increase your boot times.

If you aren't using 16gb of ram for anything then you can allocate some of that extra RAM space to a drive letter (like a virtual drive). Things stored on a RAM disk will load extremely quickly as RAM disks boast 5GB/s (even the slowest sticks can hit this) to over 10GB/s. I think jay (jaystwocents) hit over 20GB/s.

If you aren't using up that 16gb then you might as well use it for a RAM disk. Just remember, you're storing data on RAM which is volatile so backup files to HDD before shutting down.

RAM Disk is basically like a poor mans SSD solution if you got the ram. Apart from  what everyone else said. I imagine you could use it to increase loading times of specific games or programs. Of course I'm only going by what the AMD site said at one point. Not sure if actually works anything since I haven't tried it myself.

I played with a ramdisk for a little while but it didnt turn out to useful. I have 32GB of ram but most games now are way too large to try and fit onto a ramdisk unless you're using X79 or X99 platforms. Then you could make a 50GB ramdisk, load BF4 on it and still have 14GB of ram left over. That is what I want to try one day but I opted for less ram at a higher speed and lower latency which picked up performance.

You can also download a free ramdisk that isn't limited if you know what you're looking for.
