R9 290 throttling?

Go to solution Solved by Razzaa,

Fresh OS install FTW!!!!! Must have had a corrupted file. Everything is working good now.

So all of a sudden my card is throttling. It wont stay under full load and the core clock throttles down and jumps all over the place. Temps have never been any higher than 72c. When i start Valley it will climb to 100% load and max clock but then it drops and doesn't load back up to 100%. It will jump up to 90% then down to 50% and so on.Power limit is up in Afterburner. I have tried different drivers but nothing seems to help.

I hope I dont have to RMA. It would be the 4th time in 3 months.......if this is the case I will not be buying card's from MSI anymore thats for sure.

I'm sorry but that's pretty common in 290's. RMA would be your best option unfortunately.

Is it the reference card or the Gaming Edition?

Actually either way they both have heat problems.

Reference. I have always used an aggressive fan curve though and temps have always been low.

Of course it does.

Then it's still a bad cooler :P It needs to cool the card while still being quiet.

Just got off the phone with MSI and they are like ummmmm let me transfer you to Hose.......he didnt pick up.

That sucks. :( You can try an aftermarket cooler?

Amazing advice there... seriously back to topic the stock cooler on the R9 29x series is awful.

and yet im constantly getting crap about my 780 from people who are so red team they look past the fact that you cant run with a reference amd card without temp and noise issues.

corsair 600t, msi z87-g45, intel 4770k, 16g patriot viper low-pro ram, asus direct cu2 780, crucial 256gig ssd, seagate baracuda 1tb,

Oh ya for sure its a horrible cooler. I was asking if it is even worth replacing TIM or the cooler at this point. If the temps were getting high and then it was throttling I would do it but that isnt the issue. I dont think it would make a difference at this point. I am going to do a full diagnostic on all hardware. I just had a BSOD and I believe it was a ram bugcheck code.
