Okay so with The Witcher 3, GTA V and new borderlands coming out, I feel its time for a new GPU, so I am looking at a GPU that is around £200 or under, I want to also do some light video editing and rendering, this will be because I want to use OBS to record some gameplay footage.

I am currently looking at both AMD R9 280X 3GB or AMD R9 270X 4GB, but I am unsure on which to get and which is better for the future, I would prefer to not upgrade the GPU for around 3/4 years minimum, so I was thinking the bigger frame buffer would be better.

So which GP would you prefer, I do prefer AMD because I use Linux from time to time, But Nvidia would be okay if its price/performance over an AMD counter part is worth it.

Thanks!

Between the two you are thinking about, I would go with the 280/280x.

If you do not want to replace for quite a while then I would suggest spending a bit more to get the Sapphire Tri-x R9 290 but that is quite a bit above your budget. As long as you play on 1920x1080 or lower then the GTX 770 is an excellent choice but the 2GB might become a bit of a cockblock later on. I would suggest the R9 280x.

Isn't NVIDIA a lot better for linux? Anyways, that 270X will run out of processing power before it will fill those 4 gigabytes, so grab a 280(x) with 3GB and you're fine. Don't expect to not upgrade for 3/4 years though, my 7950 (280 is a rebrand of that card) with a 20% overclock (which makes it about 10% faster than a 7970/280x) isn't able to max out every game at 1080p, though high will work.

Well I can wait, I was going to wait til Christmas anyways, but I was unsure of what to get, my 6870 1GB can still play a lot of my games at high, and my girlfriend is getting it to play Sims 4 after I have done with it.

Also AMD runs better in terms of FOSS drivers, I dont like to use Catalyst inside Linux because it normally cannot update when the distro needs to update the kernel (Arch Linux) also Nvidia FOSS drivers suck balls in terms of performance, and I can use QEMU/KVM with AMD as far as I know Nvidia cant do PCI Passthrough also.

What about the 285? that any good, if not may wait til 280X drops at the next gen switch :)

Thanks!

The 285 has the exact same amount of shaders as the 280, it just consumes less power, has a smaller framebuffer (2GB) and probably won't overclock as well.
