Gigabyte 990fx ud3 + fx 8350

would this be a good combo? and would i be able to over clock with a 750watt psu and a corsair h40 cpu cooler? thanks

Do not buy a gigabyte motherboard with a fx8xxx series cpu. Gigabyte used really shitty power phases and they throttle the CPU when not even overclocking.

FX8xxx run very hot, an H40i wont let you overclock more than a few mhz, maybe 100 or 200mhz

Latest motherboards revisions have no problem with FX CPUs. Older revisions just need bios update.

H40 it's just too expensive for the performance you get. For that money, an air cooler is wonderful.

The issue is beacaue of the lack of VRM, a bios update wont add more of those to the board.

He just asked how much he could OC with that particular cooler, I actually didnt recommend it. I would keep the stock fan instead of using the H40, but thats my opinion.

Love my UD3 and 8350, got a small OC to 4.5Ghz been running for around 5 month stable. I could get it stable past 4.5Ghz but im too scared to go over 1.47v :D. I also had to flash my BIOS before putting in the 8350 using my friends 4100. Im using a H80i at the moment but plan to do a simple CPU water cooling loop. I also wouldn't get the H40 as for the same price you could get a much better air cooler. hope that helps :)

No it doesn't I overclocked my friends 8350 to 4.7 ghz on that motherboard no problem and survived 4 hours of prime95.

Mein Führer... I CAN WALK !!

Some particular motherboards don't have vrm designed for overclock. Most of them don't have a vrm heatsync and don't suport 140W CPU TDP. Some of them don't even support 125W TDP (GA 990A-D3 rev1). Do some research if you don't believe me.

An AMD 8+2 phase power design motherboard is more than enough for non sub-zero overclocking.

depends what your using it for, do you really need to over clock an 8350?

like someone said before the more cores and ghz you run the hotter it will be, so you would need a good cooler if you want to overclock.

I don't have much experience with gigabyte boards so can't comment on it personally, but always remember the performance & clock speeds vs heat and noise.

everyone has different cases, cooling, needs, gpu's etc, have you bought these components yet?

got to love Asus components

ok so looks like you haven't got this motherboard yet and wanting to upgrade from a 6 core bulldozer to an 8 core piledriver.

i think just running the 8 core at standard (4.0 ghz with 4.2 turbo) would be fine for most applications.

with the 8 cores i would look to a good cooler so it stays cool and quiet.

The m/board looks fine, however if you want to futureproof it look at a pci-e 3.0 board.

hope all this helps.

i personnaly run a FX6300 @ 3.7 ghz and have it hooked up to a Zalman LQ315 liquid cooler and its real nice cool and quiet.

got to love Asus components

Sorry if I sounded rude but it wasnt my intention all, just my english that sucks.

I totally agree with you, I was referreing to the very first 900 series of AMD boards, that didnt have enough VRM to power overclocked FX8xxx, and some of them woudnt even work at stock clocks, thats what I meant when I said that a BIOS update wouldnt fix the issue.
