Do you actually need to upgrade? 7970 is a pretty good card, you could just get a 280x and crossfire and beat any single GPU out there today. Plus there's the 290 and 290x which are really good, competitive cards vs the green team offering.

I don't need to upgrade at all, I run everything at 90+ FPS on ultra pretty much, but it's not about needing to upgrade, it's about wanting too :P I want the best of the best in the graphics department, just like when I bought the 7970 who knows how many years ago. I also want to WC my whole system, but I don't want to do it on an old card, and it's also difficult to find good blocks at a nice price for the 7970 now a days, atleast where I live.

If you want absolute top of the line there's still the R9 295x2. It's pretty good, even concidering the 1250$ to 1500$ pricepoint since it's faster and cheaper than the Titan Z with it's 2999$ pricepoint (and from what you wrote I doubt you'd need the Titan Zs double precision feature).

So crossfire doesn't appeal to you then? :P

Maybe you ought to wait for a new lineup of AMD cards since they can't be too far behind the supposedly-imminent launch of the new Nvidia cards?

Everyone gonna need to upgrade for that Star Citizen. That's what I'm trying to consider at the moment. Which team's next series will better run Star Citizen at 1080 or 1440 on ultra.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

No news.
+1 for Pirate islands guy.

I don't think Tonga is a new GPU architecture anyway, sort of like a 'tok' thing.

It will be interesting though as to what they can put up against the new GTX 900s with reports being it's a lot better than previously thought that's why they skipped the GTX 800 naming schemes for desktop GPUs. (Just rumours though :P)

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."
