GPU load bouncing all over only during gaming.

Go to solution Solved by Razzaa,

It was my settings in afterburner. When i did a fresh install i forgot to up my power limit so my card was down clocking. A user on another forum pointed this out to me. It is working as it should now. Thanks for the suggestions!!

Noticed while i was playing BF4 tonight my GPU never stays at 100%. It will throttle up and down all over the place as low as 5% briefly. Temps are all fine. This doesn't happen in Valley or fire strike though. Everything turned up to Ultra I get around 70fps but it bounces around also. I am using Beta driver but i have not heard of anyone having this issue with this driver. Im stumped. Help appreciated.

BF4 multi?

you should be aware that BF4 is now a broken game

if you get good result in valley and heaven

no worries

your gpu is fine

Are you playing with V-Sync on? Did you have this problem with the older 14.4 driver?

When the GPU usage goes down, do you get lag spikes in the game? This was happening to me too (I also have a 290) when I was using Mantle instead of DirectX.

turn off vsync and/or uncap your FPS, or enjoy saving energy and preserving life into your components by capping your FPS at 65 (this is what i do personaly.)

I'm on a 60hz display and i even found that 65FPS cap is smoother than NO FPS cap, curiously...

I dont have vsync on. I dont get any lag spikes or anything. It just seems odd. Jumps from 100% load down to 5% then up to 80% etc....

That's odd. I know BF4 will limit your GPU utilization if it does not have enough CPU power....

Or it used to. Apparently dual core pentium G3258 CPUs at stock do as well as i5s now.

I completely broke my own point I was going to explain to you. Never mind.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Must be the crappy 4790k I have. New I should have stuck with the Fx 6300 :P

nah bro, you should go with the G3258; it'll play BF4 on ultra just as well as the 4790K and FX6300 will #Kappa

I cant figure out what is happening.........look at the GPU usage.

BRO BF4 auto cap your FPS i think it's 200FPS max or something i can't remember...looks like you are just hitting that cap? is that possible?

EDIT: confirmed 200FPS is max.

I dont think so. I mean would I hit that with all settings maxed out on ultra @ 1080p? I usually hover around 70-90fps

Maybe I am worrying for no reason. I dont get any lag spikes and this only happens in BF4. Benchmarks it runs at 100% load ofc

could it be that your GPU hit the power limit target or TEMPerature target and throttle down?

EDIT: looking at the graphs the temp is consistent so it's not temp related.

I usually cap my fps to 125 and throw BF4 to mixture of ultra/low and forget about it. If it plays fine don't worry.

I dont think so. My temps are good. 70c max and 60c max vrm temps on warm days. I am going to investigate more though.

Well, after some more research i found some info out. Apparently this is common with reference 290s in BF4 and does not affect performance which would explain why i dont have any lag. I am just going to cap my fps @ 65 and forget about it. Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone.

i cap my FPS in afterburner to 65FPS for every games as my dislay render only 60 frames a second anyway and as i mentionned it's smoother...that way you save some power/heat/lifespan for your components...

I just noticed how much cooler, quieter and smoother it ran like that. I can cap it in MSI afterburner?

Yes via rivatuner open the option tab and you can cap it there, enter 65 right there and enjoy! ;) :

(a ''0'' (ZERO) input will uncap them..obviously)

NICE!! Thanks for that. I have always ran my cards at max but this makes alot of sense on a 60hz monitior @ 1080p.

yes and the reason i picked 65 is that if i input 60FPS i get more screen tearing, tried 59, 61,62 etc and 65FPS is magic...i don't know why is it just for my own monitor i can't tell but i got no screen tearing at 65FPS and it's butter smooth...much less micro-stuttering than if my FPS are uncaped or at any other value...it's quite wierd and very noticeable.

What is your CPU usage load during BF4? Mine seems high. Core 1 gets to 92% load and the other 3 get up around 75%.

well i have all 8 threads showing and they are all used pretty much evenly, only the 7th and 8th are getting lower usage and often shows 10% or less.

I would say average of 60% for the upper 6 threads and average 10% for the 2 last.

Do you have hyperthreading enabled bro?

You can display the CPU usage in-game while you play with Riva Tuner for all your available threads, just a hint... :)

EDIT: Just played a round with FPS uncap and CPU load is what i described and the GPU load is 95 to 99%, no bouncing.

FPS 75 to 85 on shangai but i play with 120% supersampling full ultra 4xMSAA
