Gtx 780 sli or Rog swift?

Bromundo

Hey Linus Tech Tips members,

Im wanting to upgrade my set up (no surprises there) and i cant decide between a Rog Swift or a second 780. I am currently running a 750 watt psu (thinking about replacing because of some annoying coil whine), a 4670k and a 1080p, 60Hz, 7ms monitor. I am aware that i may need to upgrade to an i7 to prevent it from bottling necking the 780 sli's and i would need a larger psu to power the gpu's. What is your recommendation for this?

I personally play a wide range of games ranging from arma & dayz to assassins creed to racing games and i hate stuttering, jaggies and tearing, which is quite noticeable in assassins creed in particular. I'm just concerned one 780 wont be enough for 1440p at a comfortable fps. If you had to choose between the 2 what is the best choice, thanks!

If you can get your hands on the rog swift, do it. GTX 780 + 1440p @ 144hz makes more sense than 780 sli @ 1080p. Also, there's no need to get the i7. The i5 and i7 use the same chip, the i7 just takes advantage of hyperthreading.

edit for spelling, I'm blind without my glasses.

1. A 4670k will not bottleneck 780 SLI

2. 750w is sufficient for 780 SLI

Actually you do not have to buy an I7 at all if you just OC the 4670k by a decent amount (Make sure to cool properly though). Also you do not need a larger PSU at all.

780 Ti SLI in furmark, the entire system uses 652W. It's an unrealistic load (because furmark) making the actual gaming load lower. If you still wish to change the PSU for more headroom though my recommendation goes towards the EVGA G2 850W. That PSU is sublime. Anyhow an OC on the 4670k will prevent bottlenecking easily (4.2/4.3 GHz gives more than enough headroom) or you could even go with a Xeon 1231 V3 if you do not want to OC but still want hyperthreading (which will also alleviate any bottleneck that might arise with dual 780 Ti.

I would say ROG Swift but you will not play the more demanding games at a comfortable fps on 1440p with a single 780 unless you drop the settings to medium. I would say try to get both :P

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Thats why is said it may bottleneck, there seems to be controversy over whether it would or wouldn't especially in games like arma and dayz when playing online with things like skype running in the background. And ive also seen quite a few forums and such which say sli 780's require 800+ watts.

Thanks for reply, the information is valued i just don't know if i wanna risk running 2 780's with a 750w psu and 4670k incase of bottlenecking and not enough power...

Look at my sig...

And no, I'm not bottlenecking either.

People over exaggerate when it comes to things like this.

Trust me, as long as you don't have 7 HDD's and 10 fans and aren't watercooling, you'll be fine. If you want insurance, spend more money and get the xfx 850w pro.

It's really not necessary though.

To be honest, 780 SLI is overkill for 1080p 60hz, and a single 780 isn't really enough for 1440p, especially at higher than 60 FPS.

Just thought i'd update people on what i have discovered. I decided to run task manager on a seperate display whilst playing on an arma 3 server to see how much of my CPU gets used and it barely went over 60% 40C, at stock speeds. I was only on a server with 5 other people so im not sure if it would make a difference if i was on one with say 40 people. Just thought id add this to the thread for anyone who may be interested. Thanks again to the people who replied to this thread before!

  • 2 weeks later...

I can get a second 780 for 20% off at the moment, should i get it or do you think in a couple of weeks when the 900 series are out the 780 will drop in price?

there is a chance the price will drop once the 900 series comes out...  mind you, prices might not change at all until AMD does something competitive, which is possible.  they often drop prices if Nvidia releases their next-gen before AMD.  if AMD drops prices, Nvidia will have to follow.

However, I think you're proposed upgrades are silly, in my humble opinion.  You've got a great setup!  resist the urge to buy expensive incremental upgrades!

SLI FTW. G-Stink only really helps when below 60fps which you will never be with dual 780s. Plus you can just wait and get a monitor with DP 1.2a when Adaptive sync becomes the open standard.

If you're only running 1080p atm then the 2nd 780 isn't really necessary.  The majority of games aren't going to be much trouble for a 780 to run.  That being said the 780 is cheaper than the rog swift, I just ordered another one from newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130918&cm_re=gtx_780-_-14-130-918-_-Product, which has a 13% off code that is good until the 18th.  This brings the price down to $461 and you get borderlands pre-sequel as well.  The 780 will handle 1440p @ 60fps for a good bit of games but it will begin to struggle at more graphically demanding games.

Go for the monitor, but enjoy the wait. I pre-ordered mine through TigerDirect and the last 3 shipments have gone to other customers ahead of me. I was told I should get mine next week though... they come in small supply and are selling out quickly.
