Not worth the extra $12 really. They're basically the same thing and Crucial is a better brand than Kingston imo. 

My personal rig - 4790k 4.8Ghz, Asus Z97 Pro (wi-fi ac), Corsair Dominator Plat 4x8GB, SLI GTX 1080 TI FE, Samsung 850 Evo 1TB, Crucial MX100 512GB, EVGA G3 1000W, and cooled by a hardline liquid cooling loop.

You are correct. I'm used to vengeance and vengeance LP, where Vengeance is like twice as tall as a typical set of RAM.

The official term is Very Low Profile or just VLP ram.

No that's not LowProfile, that's standard height. Here's LowProfile: Notice the VLP on the heatspreader...
