yeah... i know; not the best title

Well, since I recently turned my motherboard into a brick, I might as well consider getting a different cpu.

My motherboard+cpu are almost 3 years old, so there is no hope in RMA'ing them (I think. Tell me otherwise)

Currently, I am on a 8120.(well, was).

Is it worth "upgrading" to an intel chip, or a newer amd one?

My budget is around $200(for the cpu).

Also, motherboard suggestions to go with the cpu. $150 budget.  I don't need most of the bells and whistles

I don't game too terribly much. I mostly write, and compile code all day

Thanks for the help

If you have $350 for motherboard and CPU you should go with 4690k and MSI Z97-g45 gaming = $349.98 :D

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Guys, please read this before you go "lol 4690K + Z97".

I'd say, sell the 8120 and go with a cheap i3-4330 + b85. It'll have (much) more single threaded performance than your 8120 which is nice for compiling (usually very single-thread heavy) and consume allot less power.

It's not really worth investing in a new AM3(+) system anymore, much less invest to keep it alive.

You should go with a i5 4690k and a Msi Gaming 3 or Msi z97 pc mate.

is the extra money worth the upgrade from the 8120?

Given your specified workload. No not really. But the 8120 consumes a lot of power for that tiny workload.

This question has also been answered quite a few times already : )

So, I should just buy another am3+ motherboard?

I still game, and multitask; so a duel core might not be enough

i3-4360'll roughly do what a 8120 does, on two cores+ht. That's just the way it is...

AM3 is just not really an interesting platform anymore.

I don't really know what a highish(medium?) end cpu feels like. I have always had kind of questionable computers growing up, and this is my chance to upgrade.

Now isn't a bad time to upgrade

I would tell you to go to a microcenter but you didn't bother giving your general location

a Haswell i5 can be had for around 210~220 on sale.

A 120~130$ Z97 board will do.

I know where an electronics store is that sells intel chips+motherboards.

If you really want to know generally where I life:   Sheboygan Wisconsin US

I think there's a MC in Greenbay, it would be worth the drive since you can get a CPU+MB combo for dirt cheap in store.
