R9 290

Go to solution Solved by AlwaysFSX,

i was thinking about getting heatsinks for them... but is it worth? (like do i get better overclocking?)

I think with the price of the card + G10 + AiO + heatsinks you might be better off getting a different card with a better cooler.

So i'm planning to get the R9 290 and i wanna ask, which model is the best? I was aware that the R9 290 spews out heat like its a holiday and it gets very hot.

I'm pretty interested in the MSI twin frozr and the kraken G10... so what are your guys views? :)

Sapphire R9 290 tri-x or Powercolor PCS+. Vapor-x if you need more serious cooling

If you want the best on the market, get the sapphire vapor-x. Most other coolers perform well enough anyway (except the reference) so if you're not getting the vapor-x might as well go for the cheapest you gan get. The kraken g10 is an interesting option, however at that point you're spending way more on the card (the heat output in the room doesn't change with liquid cooling btw) than you need to. If you want the g10 get a reference model, they're usually cheaper and the pcb should be compatible wih the kraken (not the same can be said for others who make custom pcbs like asus).

Twin Frozr card apparently gets as toasty as the reference cards, Vapor-X or Tri-X would be the best out there.

how about the G10? :o

G10 only cools the core, you can overheat the memory, VRM, etc.

Just get a Tri-x, Vapour-x, or PCS+ and you'll have loads of thermal headroom for overclocking. Those three cards really do drop peak gaming temperatures by 30+ degrees compared to the reference model (or more if you choose to set a more aggressive fan curve).

hows the twin frozr tho? i like the color scheme of it xD (because my chasis is black and red themed :D)

It's not bad, but the ones I mentioned will run cooler and do so at a lower fan speed, which is something else to look out for. I'd maybe just go with the PCS+ in your case since it is a dark grey-ish black metal cooler. With that said, it's not as though the MSI card is bad, it just isn't as good as the others. If you're not planning to crossfire you'll have no issues, if you are, then I hope you have good airflow in your case :P

i have 3 intake fan and 3 exhaust! :D ( intakes are running at max 100% of the time with one as SP120 and the other two corsair LED fans) (exhaust 2 SP120s that fluctuates according to heat and the stock one which changes with tempts too)

You'd probably be fine even with SLI then. The MSI card will be fine, and if it goes tits up then at least their CS is good :P
