Do I bother upgrading my dad's old rig?

I think he's got a higher end Sandy Bridge in there with some old msi board

The case is junk

The hard drive might be usable

It has 12 gb of six channel memory

Graphics card is junk

Power supply is junk

 

Is this hardware worth using or should I just start from scratch?

Might as well start from scratch. You'll probably replace every piece in there.

You could most likely reuse the ram if it's DDR3 and maybe the HDD. Try find out the cpu model and board model

It's hard to find six slot ram mobos these days could i just use 4 out of six?

Use 3. Sandy Bridge. I might be wrong, but if there's 6 slots, than it might be triple channel.

If you can buy all new components at the same time, why not making a new build?

If cash is short, the CPU, RAM and Mobo are still decent.

If the rig is fine, don't bother upgrading it.

 

My advice would be for an upgrade is a GTX 750ti. You won't need a new PSU.

 

If you wanted to go further, you'd have to get a new power supply maybe.

 

And by the way, Sandy Bridge isn't old at all, it still performs perfectly well.

That is indeed triple channel memory. LGA 1366 is most likely the socket. Better just redoing the whole thing IMO.
