Odd question

Go to solution Solved by AlwaysFSX,

That's completely possible if they're on the same network. @178Sonic You know this, go go go.

Edit:

Go to the network and sharing center in the control panel, then the advanced sharing settings on the left side.

  • Turn on network discovery
  • Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can... etc.
  • Use 128 bit
  • Turn on password protected sharing
  • Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers

Then on each computer open the File Explorer, go to networks, let is search, double click the computer and log in with that computers password. Files must be in the folders listed to be shared.

I have a customer who wants to have her laptop and desktop be able to access the same files back and forth, how is that possible? I don't know enough about home groups to entirely understand if that is possible without a network drive (which really aren't that great in my experience.)

Shared networked folders.

It was extremely simple in XP, no idea how to do it now though.

You can also automate the folder to sync with another computer on the network every X often.

Usually butt sync services would be better considering it's a laptop and a desktop.

doesn't windows have this feature called "homegroups" or something?

Yeah, like I said I don't know enough about it and don't want to go to the customers house only half expecting to know what to do and if it's gonna be compatible.

"If all the PCs on your network are running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows RT 8.1, we recommend creating ahomegroup instead of using this tutorial. It gives you a much easier way to share files and printers on a home network. For a step-by-step tutorial on creating and using a homegroup, see HomeGroup from start to finish."

Thoughts?

Creating a homegroup is easy and it just works.

I guess you can't create on Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic, but can join. So that's a bit of a limitation. However it looks like what you sent me might be an awesome option.

Hey, I didn't get a chance to test it out full blast with the customers but I did demo it on a computer I had to restore and it looks like it will work great! I owe you a million!
