at the moment im looking for a fairly decent graphics card, not to over the top.

I will need it to run these games on high settings:

Counter Strike: Global Offensive

Team fortress 2

Left 4 Dead 2

Heroes and Generals

Rust

Blacklight: Retribution

Garry Mod

BattleField 4

Etc..

Looking for cards preferably from Nvidia in case i do get a Shield.

Thanks for any help :D

You still haven't told us the budget. I'd go with a 760/770 or even a 780 if you can aford it.

My rule of thumb is that I don't spend more than $300 on any single computer part because that allows me to upgrade my PC every year and not feel like I've wasted money. But other people might be different.

This is just my way of doing things and other people might feel differently. First, you don't want to just throw money at a graphics card. That's silly. When choosing a graphics card, you have to take into consideration 2 things, what your goal is, and what your budget is. If your goal is to play Battlefield 4 at ultra settings at 1440p then your budget needs to be in the $500- $600 range for a graphics card. If your budget is $300, then you are going to have to decide what card performs best for $300. And the more you spend on your graphics card, the less return on your investment that you see. My opinion, and this is just my opinion, is that a $700 graphics card is not $400 better than a $300 graphics card. Some people might think differently, but I think I have a point because the price/performance ratio goes way down when you increase price.

A good thing to do would be to google "Battlefield 4 Video Card IQ test" or insert whatever game you want to see and then look for the HardOCP link. They make great benchmarks of graphics cards.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/11/17/battlefield_4_video_card_performance_iq_review#.U--SKfldVmw

Lastly, if you just want my opinion, I would go for an AMD R9 280X. It's what I use and it runs Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield 4 nicely. It's about $300 right now. The other games you mentioned aren't resource heavy so you won't have a problem running them. I bought mine used but if you are a first time builder then you don't want to buy a used computer part because you need to know what to look for and how to search for used computer parts. I know a lot about buying used computer parts and even I get burned sometimes.

I get 60 frames at 1080p on a dual core APU. Ask me how.

AMD FX 8350 CPU / R9 280X GPU / Asus M5A97 LE R 2.0 motherboard / 8GB Kingston HyperX Blue 1600 RAM / 128G OCZ Vertex 4 SSD / 256G Crucial SSD / 2T WD Black HDD / 1T Seagate Barracude HDD / Antec Earthwatts 650W PSU / Coolermaster HAF 922 Case
