Grandpas Intel i7 920 -HELP!

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

An i7 920 is still a pretty good CPU, it definitely won't bottleneck an R9 270 but you might want to overclock it a little bit. The PCIe Gen 2 slot will not be a problem as long as it is 16x.

Hey guys, im building my first gaming rig so im still a noob and need some advice! I have an old intel i7 920 2.6GHz cpu from like 2008 (4 cores, hyper threaded), and im planning on upgrading my gpu to a amd r9 270. Would my cpu bottle neck my 270? also my mobo only has a pci-e v2 slot and i know the 270 has pci-e v3, could that be a problem too? Any advice is awesome, Thanks!

It won't bottleneck the 270. Don't worry :D, the 920 is still good

Word of warning- watch a few overclocking videos before you attempt an OC! (Linus has a bunch)

Also ensure that you have a good cooler - if your cooler is the stock cooler or a low-profile one I'd suggest you don't

If it's an old system check that you have a decent (Try for 600W+) power supply and enough (8GB) RAM

PCIE Gen 2 would be more than enough for that card, and i'd say that you'd be far from bottlenecking at the CPU! :) Have fun!
