he could be upgrading 1600mhz to 1866mhz, which would have less of an impact on general computer performance than an SSD.

Super wrong, SSD has MUCH more impact on the usable performance of the system. as long as he has 1333MHZ+ 8GB+ ram he's fine.

Get an SSD

your ram is decent enough, go with an SSD

Super wrong.

Go run your games on DDR2 600MHz then and come back when you have the same performance as DDR3 1866MHz

If you find 17 seconds slow you need to stop whining :D

Untill you start loading some actual programmes etc on windows, than compare it again, the HDD will be much slower. Also if you are running DDR2 the CPU will probably be the bottleneck, not the RAM. Your argument is invalid.

Btw people think that boot time is the only thing that is affected when installing an SSD, thruth is the system overall is much faster. You need to buy an SSD to experience it IMO.

It depends what you want to use it for - if you're gaming, 8gb is more than enough and I'd suggest picking up a value-oriented SSD like the MX100 120gb (or 240gb if you have the cash)

If you're editing, I'd suggest more than 8gb.

When you want to run or do something on a SSD it's near instantaneous compared to mechanical drives. The difference you see in that chart also applies to loading every piece of software or game on the machine. I'm use to things launching as soon as I click them, instead of waiting for the heads of a mechanical drive move and search for the required data. I can notice the difference in almost everything that I do.
