Replacing an iPod Touch. How do I go Android?

Go to solution Solved by connorpiper,

Those did exist actually, Samsung, and Sony both made a android mobile device that just ran android and had only WiFi.

Their sales were terrible and they stopped selling them.

But no, just get a moto E or G, there will be no issues other than no sim card.

My iPod Touch 4th gen is getting old and slow, and the power button just stopped working the other day, so I am in need of a replacement. I want to go Android, but I know that there isn't any good product like the iPod on the Android side of things. I had the idea of buying an off contract Android phone, namely a Moto G or Moto X, but I haven't found anywhere to confirm for me whether they can actually be operated without being activated with a plan. So, my question is this: can I buy an off contract cell phone and use it just like it is an iPod Touch, and if so, are there any repercussions of doing this?

Yes they can be worked without a Sim Card, any phone can :)

Personally I would get a new touch as its the same spec as the iphone so great for gaming etc, and great camera but a cheap phone would do the job

That would be just fine, but you could always just get a Galaxy Media Player if they still make it.  My dad has one and it's great.

Same processor, but the rest of it is basically an iPhone 5, screen, camera etc

And the A5 is still a decent chip especially without the overhead of running a phone! Still runs tons of games and apps :)

The 4s had a slightly slower CPU though (1.0GHz). And not having the SIM car in the phone does not make it faster?

Yeah I said "the A5 is still a decent chip" :) My nephew plays all sorts of stuff on my mums 4s, we use it to keep him quiet in the car/restaurants etc

As much as i like my ipod 5 i dont suggest getting it as a for the price i feel that you could get a moto g and be more satified if you ever get a contract.

I find tje body of the ipod 5 too small and thin and causes my wrists to hurt after an hour or so of use

Not if you put a case on it...

It is overpriced, but it does work well.

The moto's are out of date and kinda underpowered now. You would be better of with a Nexus 5 or 7 if you have the money.

Was considering going this route too. I don't have the money for the 5, but the 7 might do it. The problem is I want a device that can easily replace my iPod as a music playing and quick picture taking device, but also want something that has a nice, large, colorful, high dpi screen for watching movies/youtube in bed or on the go. I am torn between the two cause both have their ups and downs.

Just get the Moto G LTE (as it has a MicroSD slot) and run it in Airplane mode. This way you can still turn on WiFi and Bluetooth, but your battery lasts noticeably longer then if you were to use it as a phone, since it turns off the cellular radio. Added on to the fact that the Moto G already has great battery life.

Same here! My iPods power and volume buttons don't work so figured I would replace it with cheap phone. I just purchased an LG L70 for $50 from metropcs site. Good phone for the price. Even comes with KitKat 4.4.2.
