Venturing to a different sub-forum is scary.

I have a client who does insurance repairs (fires, floods, etc) and they want to have a dedicated server at their main location and be able to just access files remotely. Yeah, pretty simple, and simple methods of doing so as well.

I spent the day showing them how to scan, find the scans, etc and well I need the most simplistic yet effective way for them to access files from a remote location so I come to you guys, seeing if you know of any services they can buy or hell any software that might do the trick. I have them setup with Dropbox currently as a quick fix but he wants a in-house computer (preferred, but can take him in another direction)

I'm not a 'networking' person, I avoid these situations like the plague.

Has to be simple for these guys lol.

I saw this earlier today and it's been stuck in my head but couldn't remember what the hell it was called. Going to have to look into this one.

Or get a Synology NAS, they have great/easy software, also to use for cloud-based solutions. That way you don't even need to buy a PC (well you need something to configure the NAS with...).

In absolute simplest terms, if all they want to do is be able to access files (download or upload), you could do a simple FTP Server. Depending on if their office has a Static IP or not, you may also need a Dynamic DNS (DDNS) service. DDNS takes a Dynamic IP Address and updates it to a URL. The URL stays the same, but anytime the Dynamic Address changes, it updates the link to the URL.

A more elegant solution would be a personal private cloud, as @Ssoele mentioned.

A NAS box should be the easiest solution here. Like the guys before me wrote, take a look at the products from Synology.
