Every time I leave my computer idling and come back to it after half an hour, it responds extremely sluggishly and freezes up. After I have used it for a while it gets back to normal speed again. This is really frustrating and I would like to solve this issue. Does anyone have a solution?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

What is your full system specifications? Is your SATA controller set to AHCI mode in the BIOS (assuming no RAID)? What Windows are you using? If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, and you have HPET control in your BIOS, is it enabled and set to 64-bit mode? What background programs are running?

i would run Process Explorer

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

it will help see whats running

but sounds like antivirus or system apps. running in the background .when they see system idling

Do you think it could be Norton performing an idle scan?

it could be norton doing a scan. what i would do is ,  open   Process Explorer and  leave it  running. and take your 30 min to 60min brake, and when the system is sluggish and freezes up

you will be able to see what program is loading the cpu

Okay thanks, I'll do that today and get back to you. Also, I noticed that when I resume from idle CPU-Z says my 2600K is running at 1,600MHz. Would this be the reason(I don't think it is but I'm just asking to be sure)?

sandy bridge cpus will throttle themselves to 1600mhz when not under heavy load

here is a good thread ,its a good read

http://communities.intel.com/thread/24009

Would this throttling be what is causing the slowdown?

i still think a program is loading the cpu .you could open Process Explorer

and leave open .till your pc  gets sluggishly and freezes up.

then look at what program are using a high amount of cpu and ram

watch this video on Process Explorer

.

if you want to test you cpu..

use the intel app

Most likely no. What happens when you run CPU-Z for a while?

Go to power options advanced settings and go to the hard disk setting. It should say it turns off after 20 minutes. Type in Never instead and save your settings. This is one of the many things I do when I set up a new computer or just reinstalling.

But, it's after idle. That setting causes your hard drive to sleep(including the active one) which causes your computer to go to sleep. He's not complaining about that. It wouldn't cause the computer to become sluggish I would imagine.

Do you have Service Pack 1 installed. That fixed the problem for me.

Could you explain please? Thanks :)

I had the same problem and couldn't find a solution. Then I downloaded Service Pack (for Win7 obviously) and it fixed the problem :)

I'm not sure what causes it though.

oh... then I'm out of ideas. Maybe try safe mode to see if the reason may be the drivers.

So I ran process explorer... "System Idle Resources" uses the most CPU during both normal usage and after I'm back from a break... is this normal?

When System Idle Process is high, your CPU usage is low. So, lets say System Idle Process is at 90%. That means you have 90% of your CPU left to utilize.

try a clean boot

you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Steps to perform clean boot and check if you have the issue.

i.                    Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

ii.                  If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

iii.                 On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

iv.                 Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

v.                   Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and       then click Disable All.

vi.                 Click OK.

vii.               When you are prompted, click Restart.

viii.             After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.

check and see if it does the same thing

if its fixed it must be one of the services you stopped

Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

i.                    Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

ii.                  If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

iii.                On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.

iv.                When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Okay guys I think I have isolated the problem. I use Opera for watching Youtube videos and Chrome for web browsing. e.g. when Linus uploads a lot of unboxings I open them all in Opera so that my Chrome does not get clogged up. The after-idle lag ONLY occurs when Opera is open.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
