Power Laing DDC off of fan headers?

Hi all,

I'm planning on using a EK Single Bay Res with two EK DDC 3.2 PWM pumps. These pumps are, according to EK, rated at 18W maximum (each). Since I'm doing custom cabling, I'm trying to do the most efficient layout.

I checked with my motherboard manufacturer that each of the 7 PWM headers (CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT, SYS_FAN1-5) supplies 30W (12V x 2.5A). So I don't see why I couldn't rewire the 12V and GND from the molex connector into the empty PWR and GND pins in the 4 pin header that would go to CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT. That is, rewire from this:

Laing DDC 3 (Pump 1)

  • 12V -> 12V Molex
  • GND -> GND Molex
  • PWM -> PWM CPU_FAN
  • TACH -> TACH CPU_FAN

Laing DDC 3 (Pump 2)

  • 12V -> 12V Molex
  • GND -> GND Molex
  • PWM -> PWM CPU_OPT
  • TACH -> TACH CPU_OPT

into this:

Laing DDC 3 (Pump 1)

  • 12V -> 12V CPU_FAN
  • GND -> GND CPU_FAN
  • PWM -> PWM CPU_FAN
  • TACH -> TACH CPU_FAN

Laing DDC 3 (Pump 2)

  • 12V -> 12V CPU_OPT
  • GND -> GND CPU_OPT
  • PWM -> PWM CPU_OPT
  • TACH -> TACH CPU_OPT

Can anyone offer any insight into this? Perhaps someone else has tried this?

I'm not entirely certain that rewiring would work, but I have a Laing DDC-1T which operated off of a 4-pin fan connector, so it is possible to power some DDC pumps off of a 3/4 pin fan connector.

I would assume that most laing DDC pumps are pretty similar electrically.

It would be wise to check with EK about this this way you would be assured your loop will function properly.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.
