Car Tablet Interface Customization/Skin making

Hi! Don't know where to post this really, hope it fits in this category. So i've been thinking of making customizations to the looks of my car android UI. I could probably just get a skin (I don't know how to install that either) but I'm quite interested in making my own UI. I figured its gonna be more complex than making a simple skin. What I'm looking from this post are any insights into how one might get it done (what i need to learn, what tools to use, forums etc.) I basically have no experience in this but I think I can learn my way through this and maybe in the future tackle on cooler projects like a custom dashboard cluster. I'm not sure it's as easy as normal because they often built on hardware that's hard to get source code or details for.
