@givingtnt It all depends on your usage case, there are some legitimate uses for a bluray drive. If you watch alot of HD content.

1. Don't need a big HDD. If your FHD content is on a disc, you don't have to invest "loads" of money in storage.

2. Saving on internet data allowance, if you are so restricted (for most people here in Australia, downloading is not a viable option)

3. Better quality video. For some things, pirated versions are upscaled/reencoded. The time it has taken me to download a TV Series, realize it's not really 1080p and then I've had to buy the BluRay anyway happens alot. Also surround support can be botched/removed.

4. Can be cheaper in some cases. If you are legitimately buying your content, a season of a TV Show on iTunes can be as much as 3 season on BluRay, less on special.

But if you can source high quality, full hd video with no data or speed restrictions at a price that works for you, then it is probably not necessary. Ditto if you don't watch alot of content.

Remember that with Blu-ray you also have to factor in the cost of the software *and in some cases it is actually better buying a cheap blu-ray player and hooking it up*.

It will all boil down to whether the quality is good enough for you.  For myself I can tell the difference between a digital download and blu-ray, but not many people seem to be able to.

Just get the cheapest CD drive out there, if you can think of ways to use it. You might have old games you might want re-install, or classic CDs and DVDs you might want to re-watch and stuff like that.

I bought a blu-ray drive when I built my main system, and I think I've used it once.

For that, I had to deal with routing the necessary cables to the thing, which was a pain in the arse.

However, I bought it on the assumption that I'd then buy blu ray films to use with it. Clearly that didn't happen.

As mentioned above, it depends on your use case. If you've got a collection of optical discs that you're actively using, then an optical drive would make sense. However, for the most part, you'll likely not need it, and for those time that you do need an optical drive, you could probably get away with plugging in a USB optical drive for the purpose.

Personally, I'm likely going to move the drive out of my main system and into my HTPC, where an optical drive makes a lot more sense.

lol I bought a blu-ray drive back in 2009 and I have literally used it maybe a handful of times. Do to everything being digital, there really is no need for one.
