Nvidia sli question

Hi i am going to build a ultimate 4k gaming rig and i am wondering which card configuration would be better suited for 4k gaming

 

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3gb Ti Superclocked w/ EVGA ACX Cooler

 

or

 

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB SC w/ EVGA ACX Cooler

I've heard the 780 6GB is kind of worthless as the gpu isn't powerful enough to use all that VRAM so I would go with the 780 ti.

You'll need every ounce of performance you can get at 4K, so I suggest 780ti.

well basicly they have the same performance but because the r9 have more power consumption and im going to go with he 780's

Actually, at higher resolutions the 290x will fare better than the 780Ti.

 

But I do understand your concerns about power consumption (but an 850 watt PSU would be more than enough).

You need much more Vram @ 4K than a scant 3GB like on the nvida cards. Go with R9 290x in CF or if you must the 780 6GB in SLI cause you are going to need all the Vram you can get.

Definitely go with two 780 Tis, the 6GB models of the 780 isn't really sensible for only 4K.

780ti do not have enough Vram to run games @ 4K. Only option for OP because he must have his nvidia is 780 6GB.

It seems like you don't need more than 3GB of vram to play at 4k.

Sorry? I don't have a 4K monitor, I'm just saying that the only game that I found that used just 3GB of VRAM was Hitman Absolution. Maybe you should ask questions so you know what you're arguing against.

Well my suggestion: Get 2 R9 290Xs, they have about the same performance as 780 Tis and they have a 4GB VRAM buffer and I'm certain that most games atm won't reach that.

For an "ultimate 4k gaming rig" you need at least 2 cards. I'd also suggest dual 290x from sapphire (tri-x design is the best i think). They will be the best you can get right now.

Also, 850 to 1000w psu will be enough.

I believe development will continue to optimize 4k within a 3gb standard and 1080-1440 within 2gb.

Anything more will ostracize too many gamers.

Granted there will always be oddities like mods (Skyrim), poorly optimized games (Watchdogs) and developers who shoot towards max tech (Crysis).

What? I don't think over time VRAM usage will go down, that's why future cards likely have more of it.

Not go down, but not necessarily go up soon.

The problem is the majority of gamers are still using 2 gb cards. New tech has arrived however (on the Nvidia side) tons are still using the 600 series or older. I'd also venture the majority of upgrades are to 760 2 gig cards with the 770 a close second.

I'd also venture it'll be a year (likely 2) before developers put precedence towards 4gb+ optimization. Until tech is more widely adopted they'll have to work within a 2gb limit to appease the majority.
