Hi everybody.

I've decided to purchase the R9 290. However I was wondering what brand does everyone recommend?

Now I've heard that the card puts out and awful amount of heat, which causes the cooler to get very loud. I'm attempting to construct a quiet "sleeper" PC.

I've decided to add watercooling, and VRM heatsinks the card to alleviate any noise, and solve the problem with VRM getting hot(ter) without the reference coolers.

So, what brand of card would you recommend?

I had a computer.. and then I let FedEx ship it.

so you want to watercool the 290?

get the reference card

the reference uses Hynix VRAMs which OC quite well

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Yeah, I do. I've heard that the noise is awful.

oh yea a jet engine

but since you will be using a waterblock soultion pick the reference for cheap

the dirt cheapest is those ex-mining cards

Yeah, I do. I've heard that the noise is awful.

If you're watercooling then the card doesn't need the reference cooler, so there will be no noise

I don't know if I feel comfortable buying a non-factory refurbished used computer component.

I don't know if I feel comfortable buying a non-factory refurbished used computer component.

well that is the dirt cheapest option, and yes it risky if the card dies suddenly

if you can get a ex-mining card with warranty, you can RMA it to get it repaired

or just get a brand new reference 290

If you're not going with the watercooling route I suggest the Sapphire Tri-X or the Powercolor PCS+

Just so you know, the Giggy windforce uses a reference PCB for future waterblock use.

YES GET THIS. the gigabyte windforce cooler has to be one of the most capable coolers out there (besides the powercolor devil 13, but that's reserved for the dual chip offerings) or MAYBE the Sapphire toxic (3-fan cooler)

the MSI lightning isn't bad either, but it's always priced to the moon.

Yeah, but with the reference PCB, he can put an EK block on it later and use it aircooled for now and not go deaf :P

Giggy, R290

the only deal breaker for Gigabyte 290 is the Elpida VRAM :(

AMD stock reference if I remember uses Hynix VRAM

OC limit might be different even if they are reference design

ah good for you

but I not sure if the recent batch will be Hynix or Elpida

you know many manufacturers have to switch to Elpida coz of stock levels for Hynix is still not back to normal

True, mine is an older revision 1 card, there was a thread on OCN compiling information on what cards had which ram. Not sure how current it is now either.

You need a test bench when you go to buy a gpu so you can check before you buy.
