D.I.Y Smartwatch. Yeap you heard right

Andrew48

So I really like the idea of smartwaches and I believe they can be useful. The market is exploding with new smartwaches every day with more features and sensors and stuff. But they all cost a lot of money. So I decided to make my own smartwatch. I am not the first one to make such a watch but I am making and programming mine from the ground up. It might look like a stupid idea but I think it will work. I will be using an arduino pro mini as the brain. It will communicate with my pc or smartphone with a bluetooth module. The display is going to be a 0.96" OLED from ebay and everything will be powered by a LiPo battery. I have already ordered and received most of the stuff I need and I am making good progress. I connected the arduino with the oled screen and was able to program the arduino to display time and date, bitmap photos, a menu controlled by 4 buttons and notification using serial communication. I believe the biggest problem will be programming the arduino to do everything I want it to do. If people here are interested I will keep posting updates about my progress.

Here is just a photo of all the things I have right now. Arduino with programmer and bluetooth module and an micro sd card for size comparison

And a photo of the tiny little screen displaying some random time and date and an icon of an alarm just for testing.

Very nice, I still don't understand the appeal of smart watches, but that is a nice creation anyway.

Well, good an all, but can you pair it with a smartphone? I mean, that's kinda the part of a smartwatch. They notify about calls, texts, and even answer or forget them.

I have seen other peolple usinf this bluetooth module and could connect to it from theri phones and send data back and forth so in theory it will work. I havent tried it by my self yet though

When i saw the the words "D.I.Y" and "Smartwatch" in the same sentence i had to check this and i was correct....there is no way you will get all of that in a watch even to fit on the BIG SHOW's hand but tinker away though...please video record the water test please please please.

Haha in my mind it will work and based on some 3d modeling of everything I did some time ago, it should be small enough for a watch. I still havnt even figured out the full hardware and software side  nevermind the case :P I was thinking about 3d printing one but then I remembered that I dont have a 3d printer

Here is the one I made based on the real diamentions of everything and I believe in the end it will look something like his:10580023_694873943881419_535805153272383

Maybe you can start a new thread "owners of 3D printers needed" and see if they would work with you and you all can go into business make millions and pass me a mill or tow for giving the idea :P

haha I think I have to finish the hardware and software side first before making a case. Thanks for the idea ;) If I make a business out of it (I know I wont ) I will have your name printed on the bottom of the watch :P
