Not really a downgrade but when I was building my rig, I sold my laptop, so when all the parts arrived the motherboard needed to be RMA'd and I was stuck using a phone for about a week :(

When my 7950 died last year, I had to get a gtx760 because AMD prices were beyond what my peasant wages could justify.

When my SR-2 build threw its final temper tantrum and bricked it's 4th or 5th HDD I was forced to use my laptop for gaming until I could save up for my current computer to replace it. Going from dual Xeon E5520s and GTX 580 to a  i7-2630QM and GT 555M wasn't terrible, but it was a bit rough. Especially since at the time, the game I was pouring most of my time into was Skyrim, which isn't known for being light on GPU resources and looking decent at the same time.

Yeah, when I spilled water on my 8800GT. Not on purpose obviously. Was stuck with an AMD 5670 for about a year until I built my next system. Wasn't much of a downgrade, but it was still a downgrade.

I'm in the process of downgrading from a 3930k, 32GB, 2 780 rig to a 4790k + 16GB + 290x.

That doesn't seem like much of a downgrade. The biggest downgrade out of those is the RAM.

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

I have to sell my 660Ti to get some money for concert tickets. And the only replacement I have is a GeForce 210....

Am I going to feel any difference in performance in non gaming scenarios? I mostly just go on youtube and browse the web. Pretty much no gaming any more.

I have two monitors connected to my computer, in case it matters.

Um yes. If the 8400 GS I use at work is of any indication, then the downgrade is going to be more than noticeable in everyday usage.

To give you some perspective, the rig at work is backed by a robust i5-750, P7H55M Pro, and 4GB DDR3-1333. The 8400 GS makes life a living hell. Windows Aero lags, programs load super slowly, Alt-Tab takes double the usual amount of time, and not in the slightest because of the i5 and 4GB of RAM. I have racked up so many murderous thoughts of all the different ways I could put this card slowly and painfully out of commission, you don't even know.

Two monitors isn't going to help either. Surprisingly, 1080p Youtube isn't all that bad, albeit at slightly reduced framerates.

TL:DR - it's definitely still useable, just a question of how you're going to put up with it. And the murderous thoughts you may have about the card. BTW the 8400 GS looks on paper to be slightly below the performance of the Geforce 210, and given that they're both DDR2 cards...GLHF

what does this have to do with a 2700k?

Intel iGPU's actually work better than a 210 for multimedia / non gaming. I would recommend testing it out, you got nothing to lose.

I was about to hook it up and then I realized that my mobo only has one video output. I wonder if I can run one monitor off the 210 and one off the iGPU.

Unfortunately, the 210 is basically on par with the HD 3000, which is NOT going to be pleasant with even 1080p YT :(

Surprisingly it is working fine! Even playing 1080P 60FPS videos it only gets to around 60% usage! I think I should be fine using this for a couple months!

The 210 I have has DDR3 RAM and it has 16 Cuda cores which is2x the 8400(660Ti has over 1300...). So far its been working well! No problem playing 1080P 60FPS video! No lag either using windows 8. I'm definitely surprised by this card!

It does get pretty toasty! Idle with 2 monitors right now and its at 67C O_o. Nvidia specs say max temp is 105C, so I should be fine. I guess that is the price you pay for not dealing with the tiny whiny fans on other low end cards.

Lol 16 CUDA isn't much, keep in mind that Kepler's high shader counts are just for show compared to Fermi and before.

Hey! BF3 is actually kinda playable!!

...at 640x480 and low settings.

I guess I want to play a shooter I'll have to stick with Combat Arms.

Edit: got to 81C after like 10 minutes.
