It's just a rebrand. It's cheaper because technically it's an older card, even though it's the exact same thing. You won't miss out on anything, so if you find a good price on one by all means go for it.

I read somewhere HD 7970 GHz gives the same performance (sometimes a bit better) than R9 280X because they're basically the same card. If this is true why is the HD 7970 considerably less and will I loose out on anything if I choose it over the 280X?

The 280X is a 7970 GHz edition if i remember correctly. There isn't a huge amount of difference to be honest. The 7950/70 are still very good cards.

A 7970 Ghz Edition is slightly better than a 7970. But a 280X is a rebranded 7970 Ghz Ed.

Oh yeah they added support for the 7xxx cards. My bad.
